La sculpture est la branche des arts visuels qui opère en trois dimensions. C'est l'un des arts plastiques. Processus sculpturaux durables utilisés à l'origine sculpture (enlèvement de matière) et de modélisation (ingrédients, tels que l'argile), dans la pierre, métal, céramique, bois et autres matériaux, depuis le modernisme, il y a presque liberté de matériaux et de processus. Une grande variété de matériaux peut être travaillée par extraction, telle que la sculpture, l'assemblage par soudage ou modelage, ou le moulage ou la coulée.

�The church was built for the Theatine order, who obtained funding from the noble families in Florence, including the Medicis. Cardinal Carlo de Medici was particularly concerned with the work, and his name is inscribed on the fa�ade. Building took place between 1604 and 1648. The original designs were by Bernardo Buontalenti but a number of architects had a hand in building it, each of whom changed the design. The two most important architects were Matteo Nigetti and Gherardo Silvani. The church is also known as the Church of Santi Michele e Gaetano, because it was built at the site of a Romanesque church, San Michele Bertelde, dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. The new church was dedicated to Saint Cajetan, one of the founders of the Theatine order, though the church could not formally be named after him until his canonisation in 1671.� (San Gaetano, Wikipedia)

It was first built very rapidly in 1781 under the direction of Nicolas Lenoir (fr) (1726�1810) to house the Paris Op�ra, whose previous home, the second Salle du Palais-Royal, had burned down on 8 June 1781. The new theatre had a capacity of about 2,000 spectators and included a parterre with the lowest-priced tickets sold only to males who stood throughout the performances, an amphitheatre, and four rows of boxes. On 4 January 1903, a description published in the Anuari de l�Associaci� d�Arquitectes (Association of Architects Year Book) noted that the two entrance pavilions had been constructed, as well as the main flight of steps, the shelter for horse-drawn carriages, the outer enclosure, the viaducts and part of the great esplanade, together with the water evacuation system. By 1907 events were already being held in the great square, from which we know that the hypostyle room was entirely covered by then, while the tiled bench running around it was completed in 1914.
