Broadgate Circle Photo Sculpture

Image
Broadgate Circle, Exchange House, Exchange Square Broadgate , City of London London, September 2016 As a highly regarded urban space, the recent alterations to the Circle have been proposed with a clear and concise rationale. The changes have dramatically enhanced the amenity and civic provision, whilst celebrating the original qualities of the Circle. The Circle is one of the best examples of the travertine use in the UK. The architectural detail and workmanship of the stone with interfacing materials is exemplary. Bronze anodised aluminium and Siberian larch have been used to complement the travertine, and this simple and elegant materials palette enhances the elegance of the Circles form and geometry. Nestled within the 54 travertine columns is the reconstructed first floor restaurant, which is completely open beneath. It is now a wider, triple aspect unit with commanding views over the Circle. The first floor cantilevers forwards and backwards from the columns, benefitting from a...

One Pancras Square Photo Sculpture

Image
One Pancras Square by David Chipperfield , 2013 Pancras Square, Kings Cross London, September 2016 So elemental is the expression of the little office block that David Chipperfield Architects has completed at Kings Cross that its configuration can be described, pretty comprehensively, in a couple of sentences. Nine slabs of the same rectangular plan span between a core and a peristyle of evenly distributed columns. Glazing is recessed from the column line at ground level forming a continuous colonnade and across the entirety of the major south-facing elevation forming balconies but elsewhere structure and glass align. Judged as diagram, the design of One Pancras Square could scarcely be more economical and yet, for all its cultivated simplicity, the reality proves surprisingly ambiguous in tectonic effect and rich in historic association. Fundamental to that complexity is the energy that the architect has invested in the design of the columns. ( One Pancras Square , The Arch...

A conversation with Oscar Wilde by Maggi Hambling , 1998 Adelaide Street London, September 2016 A Conversation with Oscar Wilde is an outdoor sculpture and the first public monument dedicated to Oscar Wilde, located in London, United Kingdom. The memorial was first suggested during the 1980s and early 1990s by fans of his work, including Derek Jarman. Following Jarmans death in 1994, a committee called "A Statue for Oscar Wilde" was formed to bring a tribute to fruition. The committee included the actors Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen, and the poet Seamus Heaney. From sketches submitted by twelve artists, six were chosen to create models of their concepts. Maggi Hamblings witty and amusing work was chosen for the memorial. It features Wildes bronze head rising from a green granite sarcophagus which also serves as a bench. My Children Photo Sculpture

Image
My Children by Allister Bowtell, 2002 Duke of York Square London, September 2016 Allister Bowtell, who has died of prostate cancer aged 66, was a fine sculptor, an exuberant model maker for television and films, and a larger than life character. He was a former chairman of Chelsea Arts Club - one of the few to be hauled before his own disciplinary committee - a leading light of the London Sketch Club and vice-president of the Vesta Rowing Club. His best-known recent work was the bronze sculpture of two children playing, commissioned by the Cadogan Estate for the Sloane Square refurbishment in London. He made the statues of Melpomene and Euterpe for Oxfords Bodleian Library. In contrast, for television he made models for Dr Who, including the original cybermen, and an edible bunch of flowers for Benny Hill. He made Rod Hulls emu, and Tweedledum and Tweedledee for Jonathan Millers Alice. He made props for Monty Python and The Goodies, and body moulds for The Joys of Sex. He made a gia...
